The Complete Wash Day Routine for Natural and Curly Hair

Wash day has a reputation for eating an entire Sunday. It does not have to. Most of the time people lose is spent detangling hair that was not prepared, or redoing steps in the wrong order. Get the sequence right and the whole thing settles into about ninety minutes, most of which is hands-off.

Here is a routine that works for most textured and curly hair, and where to adjust it for yours.

Step 1: Detangle before water

Going into the shower with tangled hair is the most common wash day mistake. Wet hair is at its weakest and knots tighten under water.

Work in four to six sections. Start at the ends and move up toward the roots, using your fingers first and a wide-tooth comb second. Never the other way around.

A review in the International Journal of Trichology notes that combing hair which has not been lubricated leads to breakage, and that breaks occur precisely at the points of highest combing force. It also explains why textured hair is more vulnerable: it is elliptical and twists along its length, so stress concentrates at the bends, and it has fewer cuticle layers than straight hair.

Step 2: Pre-poo

A pre-shampoo treatment puts a buffer between your hair and the cleanser, so shampoo removes dirt rather than every last bit of your natural oil.

Apply a butter or oil to dry hair, concentrating on the ends, and leave it 20 to 30 minutes. This is a good moment to make coffee and stop thinking about your hair.

This step has better evidence behind it than most wash day advice. A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Science compared mineral oil, sunflower oil and coconut oil, and found coconut oil was the only one to meaningfully reduce protein loss — by up to 39% in damaged hair and 17% in undamaged hair when used before washing. The researchers attributed this to lauric acid, whose small linear structure lets it penetrate the shaft rather than sit on top of it.

Step 3: Shampoo the scalp only

Keep the sections in. Apply shampoo directly to the scalp and massage with your fingertips for a couple of minutes. Let the runoff clean your lengths as you rinse — the ends are the oldest, most fragile part of your hair and do not need scrubbing.

Lukewarm water throughout. Hot water strips the scalp and roughens the cuticle.

Step 4: Treat — mask or conditioner

This is the step that decides how your week goes, and the one people rush.

  • Every wash: a moisturising conditioner, ends and mid-lengths.
  • Every two to four weeks: swap in a protein or keratin mask if your hair is damaged, coloured or relaxed.
  • Add gentle heat — a shower cap and a warm towel — especially if your hair is low porosity.
  • Give it 20 to 30 minutes. Two minutes does very little.

Step 5: Moisturise and seal while damp

Timing is everything here. Products go on damp, not soaking and not dry. Squeeze water out with a t-shirt or microfibre towel — never rub with terry cloth.

Then work through in sections: a leave-in for water, then a butter or cream on top to seal that water in. If you have ever wondered why your hair is dry by Tuesday despite a good wash day, it is almost always that the sealing step was skipped or applied to hair that had already dried.

Step 6: Style and dry

Twist-outs, braid-outs, wash-and-gos or a simple protective style — whatever you are doing, do it while the hair is still damp so it sets properly. Air dry where you can. If you must use heat, use a diffuser on low.

Step 7: Protect it overnight

Satin bonnet, scarf or pillowcase. This single habit does more for length retention than most products, because it stops the friction that quietly breaks hair every night for years.

A LushLoxx wash day

  1. Detangle dry, in sections.
  2. Pre-poo with Miracle Gro Hair Butter, 30 minutes.
  3. Shampoo the scalp, rinse lukewarm.
  4. Keratin Creamy Hair Mask under a cap, 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse.
  5. Seal damp hair with the Hair Butter, in sections.
  6. Style damp, air dry, bonnet on at night.

Both products come together in the LushLoxx Hair Care Bundle, which covers the treat and seal steps of every wash day.

Consistency beats intensity. A modest routine you actually follow every week will always outperform an elaborate one you manage twice a year.
